Easy DIY Crepe Paper Flower

Easy DIY Crepe Paper Flower

These beautiful crepe paper flowers are inspired by a craft book I have by Martha Stewart, but since I was lacking some of the materials to make the flowers from the book, I improvised with whatever I had at the time.

The ones I made turned out just as good as the ones in the book, so I decided to share them with you guys.

Crepe paper flower bouquets look so good in a vase and are a perfect present for someone in the spring and summertime. The materials you will need are:

  • Green floral wire (available in most craft stores)
  • Crepe paper (for petals, leaves and stamen)
  • Hot glue gun (other types of glue can work as well)
  • Scissors (I also used a small pair not on the picture)
  • Wire Cutters
  • Felt (not on picture -- optional for stamen instead of crepe paper)

To begin, cut a piece of wire the length you want the stem to be using the wire cutters.

For the stamen, take a bit of felt or crepe paper, and create a small ball. I cut a piece of felt and balled a bit of tissue inside it. Next, hot glue the stamen to the stem.

Cut strips of crepe paper for the petals.

Stack the strips together and cut the petals into the shape as shown. Make sure the grain of the crepe paper is vertical. You should have about 15-20 petals in total, 3-5 small ones; the rest larger.

Hot glue the petals to the flower and twist any loose ends onto the stem. Start with the smaller petals and work your way to the larger ones.

Once all the petals have been added to the flower, use green crepe paper to cut leaves for the flower. There are a number of different shapes the leaves can be. For my flower, I cut them the same shape as my petals except larger, then added two notches onto either side. Make sure the grain is vertical.

Hot glue the leaves to the flower at the desired positions and twist any loose ends to secure them to the stem. Separate the outer petals from the flower by pulling them outwards to open the flower more. Finally, curl the leaves and petals outwards to give the flower a finished look, and voilà! Make more flowers for a nice bouquet.
